A van road trip in Andalusia: 6 romantic days of nature and freedom

A symbol of freedom and escape, taking off in a converted van for two has been a dream of ours for a long time! Travel bloggers on recitsdescapades.com since 2017, it was for Charlotte’s surprise 30th birthday party that we took the plunge! We set off in the City Car Sunlight van from VanBreak. A 6-day, 5-night getaway for two in March 2021 in the wide open spaces of Andalusia, off the beaten track. We tell you all about our road trip for two…

Choose the freedom of a van holiday in Andalusia

If there’s one word that can encapsulate all the emotions of this escapade, it’s this one! FREEDOM. Freedom not to plan anything, freedom not to have a schedule, freedom to go where you want, freedom to forget everything and just enjoy.

It’s a strong word, a feeling we’ve all put aside for a while in 2020 (hello health crisis), and which with a van takes on its full meaning.

Leaving in a converted van means feeling independent, autonomous, even self-sufficient. It’s about putting aside for a few days our 1000% Parisian city life, and forgetting about the never-ending health crisis. It’s also, and above all, about taking time out for a romantic getaway, just the two of us.

Andalusia off the beaten track in a converted van

For this new road-trip, we chose to discover a little-known facet of Andalusia, the natural version of this highly touristy region of Spain. From olive groves and white villages to stunning mountain ranges, we explored the area west of Malaga.

Thanks to the expert advice of the VanBreak team, we spent two days in the grandiose Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park. Words fail us to explain its raw beauty. This is a hiker’s paradise. You can spend a day, a week or a month here, as nature has so much to offer. Thanks to the van, we’ve been able to stop off in some very wild places for cocooning evenings for two.

Andalusia is also famous for its pretty white hilltop villages. At this time of year (March and the health crisis), we were alone in the world. Our van took us to the pretty villages of Gaucin, Ubrique, Grazalema and Zahara de la Sierra. A particular favorite is Casares, one of the first villages on your route from Marbella.

The magnificent town of Ronda, perched on its steep cliffs, also charmed us. We recommend you take the time to explore it on foot, parking your van outside town. A few kilometers away, don’t miss the breathtaking Caminito del Rey and the El Torcal de Antequera nature reserve.

A romantic van adventure: our experience

SCOOP: road trips for lovers are great!

Adventure in a van means taking the time to think about your itinerary, cook together and adapt to each other’s pace. Our stay of several days in a van in the middle of nowhere gave us a real sense of freedom and communion with our environment.

Digital Nomad in a converted van: testimonial

Digital Nomad in a converted van: testimonial 1600 1600 VanBreak - Campervan and MotorHome Hire in Spain

Life wouldn’t be exciting without the moments that mark us, move us, thrill us, make us laugh or cry. It’s these moments that ultimately make up our lives, because in truth, we don’t remember people but rather moments spent with them, we don’t remember places, but moments spent in those places. For some people, these moments are even more memorable because they are experienced around the world and outside their comfort zones.

We met Wafia, business coach and communications specialist for small businesses, who spent a month traveling around southern Spain with her husband, both digital nomads. As you can see, what counts most for adigital nomad are the special moments that take us out of our comfort zone or create strong emotions within us. That’s why Wafia is a digital nomad and her motto in life is “Life is about moments”. “I don’t actually remember VanBreak, but the great times I had in their van! That’s what I’ll always remember,” confides Wafia with a big smile.

Introducing our digital nomad Vanbreaker

3 years ago, my husband and I decided to go it alone and become Digital Nomads. We travel while we work and mainly go to Coworking or Coliving because we like to meet other digital nomads, but in a small corner of our heads, the seed of the Vanlife experience was already well planted.

After almost 3 months of confinement in Spain, this seed has blossomed; we crave freedom, space, nature and fresh air more than ever. Come on! we went for it, leaving for a month in a van to explore southern Spain.

After a magnificent month marked by the invincible wind of Tarifa, the sunsets of the caleta de Cadiz, the delicate charm of the white villages of Grazalema and Jerez de la frontera, the crystal-clear water and sand dunes of Bolonia, the loving, benevolent non-conformism of Caños de Meca, the impetuous ardor of the fishermen of Barbate, the raw landscapes of Capo de Gata, the flamenco rhythm of the streets of Seville, the exquisite beauty of Granada.A month marked above all by the charm, ardor and benevolence of Andalusia and the good paella of Valencia. We’d like to share with those interested in this #VanLifeWork experience, the important information you need to know when traveling by Van while working.

1/ Choosing a converted van: your home as well as your office

When we decide to rent a Van, we look at the Van’s comfort because we’ll be sleeping and living in it for a month, but as a Digital Nomad there are additional criteria to validate:

  • Sockets : How many sockets are there? and how autonomous are they? because you’ll need to recharge your computer often.
  • The office: Make sure you have a good place to work comfortably and take calls. In our case, there were two of us, so we had to be able to work on both at the same time.

We chose to rent a Van from Vanbreak. The rental process was fairly straightforward, the customer service was super-available and, above all, the van is perfectly suited to work. We’re off to Malaga in June 🙂

2/ Internet connection: Not just a simple connection but a very good one

Once you’ve rented your van, like all good digital nomads, you’ll have to deal with the all-important question of Internet connection. This was our main concern, because we not only had to manage the Internet connection, but also ensure that the speed was good enough to support videoconferencing. After a good deal of research, we opted for a Vodafone router and chip (local supplier). This was the most economical option (router 75 euros + chip 50 euros). It was great knowing that Spain has good internet coverage. We had no problems there, with the exception of Cabo de Gata, where we turned around for hours before finally finding a spot – in the middle of nowhere – to get Internet. We needed a few challenges to spice up our experience!

3/ Managing spots and customer calls

There’s no denying that the experience of working remotely and living in Van can sometimes be challenging. When there are emergencies to deal with and the place you’re in is full of people and lots of noise, you have to lock yourself in the Van to take your call. And when it’s 35 degrees outside, it can get difficult! But it’s worth it. The best advice is to manage your spots well, looking at the testimonials in the “Park4night” app when you have an important call.

Another essential point: even if you have a good relationship with your customers, you probably don’t want to take a video call where they see you in a car… It’s not very professional. Fortunately, there are now backgrounds with Zoom, Skype or Google Meet. So you’ll be able to take your calls in a van by the sea with a meeting room backdrop… isn’t that wonderful? 🙂

4/ Working is good, but living is better

Every Digital Nomad knows the importance of finding the right balance between work and pleasure. When we travel, we want to discover, marvel and have a good time. So it’s important to choose the right period to leave in a Van, if you’re going away for a short time. Don’t leave at a time when you have big projects to deliver, for example.

After a month in Van, we’ve managed to keep up with work while enjoying the finer things in life. Life in a van is an incredible experience. Experience the true meaning of freedom, connect like never before with nature, let go of the material, get back to basics and understand more than ever that home is where the heart is, and the office too 🙂

Kite trip in a van in Tarifa – Erti’s story 1200 1600 VanBreak - Campervan and MotorHome Hire in Spain

Read about Erti’s kite trip to Tarifa in a van. Our Vanbreakeuse was away for 2 weeks in a VW california ocean combi van. Departing from our agency in Malaga, she headed for the province of Cadiz: destination Tarifa! There, she completed her kite surfing course with our partner FreeRide Tarifa. The young woman tells us all about her adventure!

Kite trip in a van in Tarifa: the advantages of the van + kite surf combo

Why did you choose to go kitesurfing in Tarifa in a van? What are the main advantages?

In the back of my mind, I’d always had the idea of setting off on an adventure in a converted van. This desire was reinforced by the positive feedback from friends and colleagues, and I couldn’t wait to give it a try myself. Renting a van with Vanbreak and kitesurfing with Freeride is, in my opinion, the perfect match between these two worlds.

The Tarifa kite trip has many advantages. It’s simple in terms of booking and organizing the trip, and reliable for the quality of the van and kitesurfing lessons. The Vanbreak and Freeride teams are great, and were very helpful during my road trip. Their availability made all the difference, especially for a solo traveler, or for any type of traveler for that matter.

Can you describe your kite trip to Tarifa in a VW California Ocean van? What did you learn during this experience?

In my opinion, the Volkswagen combi is one of the best campervans around. It’s designed for maximum comfort and is very functional to use. I really enjoyed the experience.

Tarifa: kite surfing paradise

How were the kitesurfing lessons with Freeride Tarifa?

The lessons with Freeride were great. I’d say the Freeride instructors are like wind wizards. They are very attentive and precise in their advice, to make sure you get the best understanding of kitesurfing, theoretically, technically and practically. I felt very confident and I’m already planning to do another kite trip in a van to Tarifa with them!

Where to sleep in a van in Tarifa

Is it easy to find a place to spend the night in a van around Tarifa?

Yes, it’s very easy to find a place to sleep around Tarifa. The Park4night app is very useful for finding a place to stay. What’s more, Tarifa is a camper van paradise, where you’ll meet lots of nice people along the way, who often provide very useful tips.

We are Van Breakers!

To truly get the Van Break spirit, you have to know about its founders! Discover who they are and why they want to spread the ride & road trip spirit from their Malaga haven!

Life is a ride… with friends!

Before they became business partners and co-founders of Van Break, Aurélien and Olivier aka Aurel & Oliv, were first colleagues and became good friends. The French duet has met in Malaga five years ago. When Olivier arrived for his first day at work, he was welcomed by Aurélien. “I’ll never forget our first encounter. Aurélien was the first person I met from our company when I joined. He welcomed me and we soon became close mates!”, comments Olivier.

Olivier and his Family

They immediately spent a lot of time together and shared their leisurely time with a group of sportive colleagues and friends.  Olivier, who knew Morocco and had family there organized a road trip from Malaga to Essaouira to go surfing. “This trip really brought us together! remembers Aurélien. “I had surfed in Ireland before, but we shared something really special that was to inspire us in the future: the ride spirit. We were five in a car and were crazy about surfing! Man, that was epic!”

Aurélien with his wife

In love with Andalusia

There’s something else that the Van Break entrepreneurs share: a sheer passion for their living place, Andalusia. Aurélien had discovered Cordoba when he was 23 during a student exchange. “That’s when I fell in love with this region… Years later, when I had a job opportunity in Andalusia as an expatriate, it perfectly made sense to me to settle there and explore that strong connection with the culture, people, language…”

Olivier complements: “For five years now, we’ve been delving into this incredibly rich andalusian culture ; it’s the cradle of Spain. It offers its riches and opportunities to everyone who’s a bit curious. Together with Aurélien, we’ve been roaming through it and we love it every day: whether it’s for kite surf, food, music or breath-taking natural sceneries!”

From leisure to business

That love for the region coupled with an entrepreneurial mindset was bound to be fruitful…  August 5, 2016. The two mates are lounging in a wooden cabin with a breathtaking view over the Tarifa bay. Olivier tells this story with a spark in the eye: “I was looking at Airbnb, bumped into that van rental offer. Awesome! I had no idea these guys offered it!  For those who don’t know: Tarifa is the spanish birthplace of surfer vans!”

One thing leading to another, Olivier enquires about local van rentals and shares his conclusion with his friend: there’s an untapped business potential, right here in Andalusia.  The idea soon came about to create a digital platform allowing riders to easily book a campervan and live a memorable road trip!

But an idea is not concrete before it has a name… Jessica, Olivier’s wife and third behind the scene Van Breaker, found the name of the start-up: “It is was late in the evening during a never-ending and boozy brainstorming session just the three of us. We shared huge lists of names. I had recently started to ride and thought: the ride spirit, Point Break, vans… Why not Van Break?” The guys loved it! Van Break, it would be!

I’ll conclude this post with the three mottos that best describe Van Breakers according to the founders:

– Life is a ride!

– Meet, discover & share

– Go back to basics

Why travelling in a converted van is so much FUN?

Why travelling in a converted van is so much FUN? 1628 1242 VanBreak - Campervan and MotorHome Hire in Spain

4 reasons (among others) why traveling in a converted van is a great experience!

If you could live anywhere, wouldn’t you want to live everywhere?

Some time ago, my French friends who had just set up their campervan rental business, VanBreak – Malaga, had an idea. They asked me to test one of their latest campervans, the Volkswagen California Ocean, for a road trip from Malaga (Spain) to Faro (Portugal)… an itinerary along some of Europe’s most beautiful coastlines. A good break for me after some intensive touring, I didn’t hesitate to say YES and start working with the Vanbreak team :).

In the days leading up to my departure, I could think of nothing else but driving around in a bikini all day. Dreaming of camping on beaches and gathering around a fire drinking beers under the stars.

Guess what? The reality was very similar to this one. What an incredible experience! It was hard to say goodbye to my new “home” after a week of totally free living in van life mode. This way of traveling perfectly represents what I love; flexible travel, finding your own way, living an authentic and enriching travel experience, traveling with friends and making new ones.

There’s no freer, more satisfying feeling than packing things into a van and setting off on a road trip, with nothing less than good music, good friends or your love and the road for company.

Road travel in a camper van isn’t just for adventure seekers and nature lovers. With an on-board shower, a small kitchen and a very comfortable bed, this way of traveling is suitable even for less experienced campers.

1. Freedom

This is absolutely the best reason, it’s the freedom to discover the beauty of the road in a motorhome. You can go wherever you want. As long as there’s a road and you don’t run out of petrol, everything’s fine. You have total freedom to drive, stop and sleep wherever you want! You’ve reached a place but don’t really like it? Don’t worry, you’re free to find somewhere else that’s just right for you! You can even sleep in the middle of a city (and save a lot of money by avoiding expensive hotels).

#home is where you park your van 😉

Freedom! One day you spend the night on the beach…

2. Discover the most exclusive places

There are few hotels in the world that can offer you a similar experience, with breathtaking views in the middle of nature. You can literally sleep on the beach, feel the sea breeze and hear the hypnotic sound of the waves on the ocean. In the morning, it’s just you and the birds watching the sun rise over the horizon. Waking up to sunlight on your face is the best feeling in the world!

Parking in the middle of nowhere, simply because it’s so beautiful!

Yes, it may be a little less comfortable than a five-star bed, but that’s the charm of the van!

3. It’s a cheap way to travel

Traveling in a van is the cheapest way to enjoy a vacation. It’s both accommodation and transport, so if you’re looking for adventure, it’s absolutely the way to go.

When I stay in a luxury hotel, I’m so bored after two hours by the pool that the only way to entertain myself is to shop or order food and drinks. When you’re on a road trip, you enjoy every moment of your adventure and magnificent views. So you don’t need much entertainment. For me, the most amazing moments are mornings at dawn when you have your freshly brewed coffee while admiring the sunrise on your bed, picnics on the beach for aperitifs with cheese, bread and good wine.

A simple but perfect meal, with an even better view.

Shop in supermarkets instead of stopping at service stations on the road. You’ll save money.

4. Every day is an adventure

From deciding where you’ll sleep, eat and shower from one day to the next, it’ll never be the same! Every day, a new road will lead you to a new place, a new vision, a new community and a new way of life. Every day, you’ll have the chance to meet new people and learn new things without even realizing it.

Love the free life!

Going on a road trip and traveling in a converted van definitely takes you off the beaten track. During our search for nice places, we often went on back roads, not knowing where to go… and just like that we found the most beautiful places. What’s more, many of the spots you can go to with your van in search of a nice spot are very rural with few hotel options, especially the close-in areas or, better still, on the beach where accommodation is limited.

Home is where you park it.

I loved the feeling of freedom that accompanied this road trip. The idea of being able to head towards the horizon and never come back. I could live like that for years to come… 😉 For more information, contact VanBreak Malaga.
