4 reasons (among others) why traveling in a converted van is a great experience!

If you could live anywhere, wouldn’t you want to live everywhere?

Some time ago, my French friends who had just set up their campervan rental business, VanBreak – Malaga, had an idea. They asked me to test one of their latest campervans, the Volkswagen California Ocean, for a road trip from Malaga (Spain) to Faro (Portugal)… an itinerary along some of Europe’s most beautiful coastlines. A good break for me after some intensive touring, I didn’t hesitate to say YES and start working with the Vanbreak team :).

In the days leading up to my departure, I could think of nothing else but driving around in a bikini all day. Dreaming of camping on beaches and gathering around a fire drinking beers under the stars.

Guess what? The reality was very similar to this one. What an incredible experience! It was hard to say goodbye to my new “home” after a week of totally free living in van life mode. This way of traveling perfectly represents what I love; flexible travel, finding your own way, living an authentic and enriching travel experience, traveling with friends and making new ones.

There’s no freer, more satisfying feeling than packing things into a van and setting off on a road trip, with nothing less than good music, good friends or your love and the road for company.

Road travel in a camper van isn’t just for adventure seekers and nature lovers. With an on-board shower, a small kitchen and a very comfortable bed, this way of traveling is suitable even for less experienced campers.

1. Freedom

This is absolutely the best reason, it’s the freedom to discover the beauty of the road in a motorhome. You can go wherever you want. As long as there’s a road and you don’t run out of petrol, everything’s fine. You have total freedom to drive, stop and sleep wherever you want! You’ve reached a place but don’t really like it? Don’t worry, you’re free to find somewhere else that’s just right for you! You can even sleep in the middle of a city (and save a lot of money by avoiding expensive hotels).

#home is where you park your van 😉

Freedom! One day you spend the night on the beach…

2. Discover the most exclusive places

There are few hotels in the world that can offer you a similar experience, with breathtaking views in the middle of nature. You can literally sleep on the beach, feel the sea breeze and hear the hypnotic sound of the waves on the ocean. In the morning, it’s just you and the birds watching the sun rise over the horizon. Waking up to sunlight on your face is the best feeling in the world!

Parking in the middle of nowhere, simply because it’s so beautiful!

Yes, it may be a little less comfortable than a five-star bed, but that’s the charm of the van!

3. It’s a cheap way to travel

Traveling in a van is the cheapest way to enjoy a vacation. It’s both accommodation and transport, so if you’re looking for adventure, it’s absolutely the way to go.

When I stay in a luxury hotel, I’m so bored after two hours by the pool that the only way to entertain myself is to shop or order food and drinks. When you’re on a road trip, you enjoy every moment of your adventure and magnificent views. So you don’t need much entertainment. For me, the most amazing moments are mornings at dawn when you have your freshly brewed coffee while admiring the sunrise on your bed, picnics on the beach for aperitifs with cheese, bread and good wine.

A simple but perfect meal, with an even better view.

Shop in supermarkets instead of stopping at service stations on the road. You’ll save money.

4. Every day is an adventure

From deciding where you’ll sleep, eat and shower from one day to the next, it’ll never be the same! Every day, a new road will lead you to a new place, a new vision, a new community and a new way of life. Every day, you’ll have the chance to meet new people and learn new things without even realizing it.

Love the free life!

Going on a road trip and traveling in a converted van definitely takes you off the beaten track. During our search for nice places, we often went on back roads, not knowing where to go… and just like that we found the most beautiful places. What’s more, many of the spots you can go to with your van in search of a nice spot are very rural with few hotel options, especially the close-in areas or, better still, on the beach where accommodation is limited.

Home is where you park it.

I loved the feeling of freedom that accompanied this road trip. The idea of being able to head towards the horizon and never come back. I could live like that for years to come… 😉 For more information, contact VanBreak Malaga.
